Happy 6th Birthday To This Website.

Well the official birthday isn’t until 12/06/2018, however I will be extremely busy on that day and may not be able to write a blog on that day.

So what has happened in 6 years?

Well, this site has gone through more than a few changes in terms of look and feel. More than that functionality has changed. Look at the addition of The Trade Counter and DealNet for example. There are more changes planned soon. More importantly the blogs content focus has expanded and developed, from being a blog website to now being a fully functional multi purpose website for both my business and personal interests. This site has grown from 6 pieces of individual content and functionality to over 3,500 items of content.

In terms of visitors this site has gone from 200 unique visitors visitors a month to an average of 11,000 unique visitors taking in an average of 4.92 pages per visit. The best ever month saw 20,759 unique visits.

I am delighted by these figures and even more delighted about the large number of positive business conversations that are taking place with the starting point being this website.

I would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to both the occasional and regular reader and visitor alike for visiting, reading and returning!

Has It Really Been 45 Years?

I was on the Motorola website earlier today looking for some help with my Motorola mobile phone. I stumbled across this article on their site.

I simply cannot believe that it is 45 years since the first mobile phone was introduced by Motorola in 1973!

I had the two of types of Motorola pictured above and at one point had a Motorola car phone as well. These were very good pieces of kit in the early 1990’s. Fast forwards to the mid 2000’s when I owned two mobile phone businesses I sold a lot of the RAZR mobile phone. One Christmas (2005, from memory) I simply could not enough of the RAZR pink. I must have sold 200 units of that particular device in he fortnight running up to that Christmas!

Personally I moved to Nokia with Symbian and then to Android devices with a brief dalliance with Apple (Lets not go there!)

And we go full circle. I have one of the new G series with Android and I swear by it in much the same way as I relied on the phone on the left in the picture above in 1992! I am pleased with this latest Motorola.

In the times since 1991 I have owned more than 30  mobile phones. The Motorola’s are up there with the best in class, so let me close this blog by saying Happy 45th birthday Motorola!

15 Years is a long time in Websites!

News has just reached me that on 25th of January 2018 my Content Management System weapon of choice and the software that is the mighty powerhouse behind this website, WordPress, celebrated its 15th birthday!

15 years is an awful long time in technology terms, things come and go and evolve and it is to WordPress’ credit that it has matured and developed and survived for 15 years.

I have used WordPress as my go to weapon of choice for building websites since early 2011. My previous weapons of choice were Joomla and before that Mambo. Joomla fell out of favour with me in 2011 after some updating issues and has only been used for 2 projects since. Having a quick look through the logs and registers just before writing his blog I calculated that I have built 70 sites using WordPress. Some are very simple 2-4  page websites and some much more complicated websites such as this one that get thousands of visits a month. In fact my record for developing a very, very simple WordPress site is 25 minutes!

I have moaned about the plugin ecosystem and the fact that some plugins require a hefty payment before they can do anything useful before. I won’t bother this time. To be fair all CMS tools are afflicted by this. I do want to praise some plugin developers for the  admirable work they have done to extend the WordPress platform. There are of plugins that I am thankful for and indeed I am thankful to their developers for the effort they put in not only to develop the plugin but to keep it up to date as well. Lastly on this point I appreciate how easy it is to maintain WordPress.

I have played around and worked  with a large number of CMS tools in both my technical career and business career and I dread to think what “weapons” I would be using if WordPress had not replaced Joomla after the issues I had with them in 2011.

So to round this blog off. I just want to say “Happy Birthday WordPress!”

The WP tavern article is here.

Happy 4th Birthday to this blog!
